[comm] dear not-primetime author:
Dear NPTimer,
Thank you so much for writing something for me! No matter which fandom we matched on, I am very excited to see what you come up with. As for prompt length, I think there might be some disparity this year, but that's because I chose "Any" on a fandom and chose specific characters on others and want to provide adequate prompting for both! So if the prompt for the fandom you wish to write is shorter than others, please absolutely know that I want it just as much. For any of the fandoms, other nominated characters I didn't request or other characters from that universe as you deem appropriate are welcome to appear if it adds to the story you'd like to tell. I will include a list of some general likes and dislikes, then the fandom-specific prompts. I am comfortable with all ratings, but I would like to not receive inappropriately explicit fics about underage characters - implication of whatever is fine, but if characters are underage in the fic then keep it teen-rating friendly. Otherwise, explicit is fine if you feel compelled! All my fandom-specific prompts are suggestions. If you have an idea that you're concerned doesn't fit one of them, go ahead! I look forward to seeing the story you felt most passionate about telling.
Likes: domesticity / slice of life, missing scenes, character study, action / adventure, traveling / vacations, hurt / comfort, partnership, constructive confrontation, realistic use of social media where appropriate / epistolary fiction, canon typical violence, post-/pre-canon, arc-alteration / fix-fic
Also, for these three specific fandoms I have requested, I would completely welcome crossovers between any combination of them if you feel so inclined.
Dislikes: character bashing towards anybody, graphic depictions of rape / rape as plot device, gore, breathplay, bloodplay, nihilism, hopeless endings (but sad is okay)
Fandom-specific stuff
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika | Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Characters Requested: Any [Akemi Homura, Kaname Junko, Kaname Madoka, Kyubey, Miki Sayaka, Momoe Nagisa, Sakura Kyouko, Shizuki Hitomi, Tomoe Mami]
These are provided for quick reference, and I'm flexible if you chose to write for a different pairing! I can't think of any that would actually squick me except any involving Junko, Nagisa, or Kyubey.
Pairings I like: Kyoko/Sayaka, Kyoko/Homura, Madoka/Homura
I would absolutely love to receive fic about any of the nominated characters in any configuration! Gen is absolutely welcome, as are shipping fics. I'll try to provide some general ideas for each of the characters and the couple of pairings I listed, but as noted if you want to include another pairing I'm pretty flexible. I'll mark it if any prompt involves Rebellion spoilers.
Akemi Homura - I would appreciate fic from any point in her life. I would love to know things about her history before she became so consumed with her quest to save Madoka. Did she have a family? What happened with them? How did her disease affect her life before? Does it continue to affect her once she contracts? Any exploration of one of the time-jumps we didn't see or only barely saw would be fantastic. I am really, really fascinated with the fact that Homura steals and uses real, military-grade weapons as opposed to pretty, magical spirit-derived weapons. That's fascinating and poignant to me. Following Rebellion [spoiler warning] I would be interested to see maybe some perspective on her relationship with Madoka and the other girls, what she intends to do in the future and if it involves some kind of 'redemption' or not.
Kaname Junko - I think that her perspective on what is going on with her daughter during any point during the anime or Rebellion. I also think that her implied history with Madoka's teacher is an interesting juxtaposition to the lives the girls are currently living. Anything about her point of view or relationship with her daughter (and others surrounding them) would be great.
Kaname Madoka - I admire Madoka's tireless compassion so much. One thing I think would be interesting to explore, though, is where the limits of that compassion are. What makes her angry? What makes her hurt in a way that is a little closer to her, personally, than her empathy for other girls? It's not that I think she has much darkness in her at all, but I think that the fact that she shows a tremendous amount of backbone in demanding that Kyubey grant her wish shows that there's a little bit of iron at the center of the sweet cotton candy. Something that explored that about her would be really interesting. I'm also interested in her and the other girls' sort of shadow-memories of Homura's many timeleaps that they seem to express from time to time, so that or some of the other timeleaps themselves would be interesting subject matter.
Kyubey - Kyubey's seeming lack of understanding of human values while engaging with them and manipulating them so thoroughly is chilling. His interactions with any of the girls in previous timelines would be interesting to me, as would exploration of his perspective on things. If you have any ideas about Kyubey's race, where he comes from, memories he has, how he perceives reality uniquely, or other such worldbuilding things, I'd also be interested to see that. Following Rebellion [spoiler warning] I think an exploration of why he is suffering so much with Homura would be terrifyingly fascinating.
Miki Sayaka - I love Sayaka's kind of embarrassing exuberance and her strangely meta awareness of things. Once again, I wonder if her previous experience with different timelines, always becoming a witch, has something to do with that or if it is as innate in her personality as her sense of justice. I think the fact that she is the one who seems the most interested in being something like a superhero is very engaging, and it makes me wish for better for her. Rebellion [spoiler warning]: Either before or during Rebellion, I would love to have anything you have to say about angel!Sayaka and angel-as-human!Sayaka. I am so, so proud of her for her character development from someone who had been so broken by love to someone who is so exceptionally mentally healthy even at the prospect of the bittersweet nature of having been able to come back to Kyoko and human life. Also, her adjusting to her 'second chance' at being human following Homura's transformation would be interesting to me, too.
Momoe Nagisa - Rebellion character, so spoilers. I have read the wiki article on her background, but that's basically all I know about her! I don't even know what more there is to know, if there's anything, as far as canon is concerned. However, that makes her a playground of new things to explore. I think it's so sweet that she basically has adopted Mami as a new-mother even though Mami is just a teenager herself. However, I can imagine that being difficult at times, whether she is manifested as Bebe or as her human form. Something about that whether in a slightly AU setting or during Rebellion would be interesting, as would any commentary about why inside her head that her witch form was so uniquely dangerous.
Sakura Kyouko (Kyoko) - (Both spellings are technically correct and I default to the one without the 'u,' sorry for any confusion.) I am so emotionally involved with her backstory and with her strange balance of spiritual association with very visceral carnality. Of all the magical girls, she seems to identify with her human body the most, which is very interesting given the mechanics of the Soul Gems. Not only does she eat a lot, but she also exercises deliberately and seems to be very strongly attached to being very physical in general. That character trait of hers is very interesting to me. Also the fact that she is rebelling against a more Sayaka-brand idealism because it has hurt her also seems like a very deep well for consideration. Anything about her pre-canon relationship with Mami or her baby sister or something like that would be very welcome, as would anything about past timeline experiences she's had with any of the girls. Rebellion spoiler warning: Also, any slice of life stuff from when angel!Sayaka had taken her in and she was attending school and being kind of obliviously almost-normal would be very sweet.
Shizuki Hitomi - The inclusion of Hitomi as a character is something that is very brilliant contrast in the show. Why isn't she a suitable candidate to be a magical girl? Does it have to do with the fact that she is literally so sheltered that she would never want anything? Does it have to do with the fact that it'd be too messy if very wealthy people's daughter went missing ultimately? Anything about her life during or after the series would be interesting to me, particularly her point of view on the absences in her life as things begin to happen. She senses being a third wheel but has no idea what's causing the feeling, really, and that's very sad but interesting - that she has no idea of the darkness just under her nose. Either her life remaining mundane in spite of everything or her finally becoming involved are equally interesting concepts to me.
Tomoe Mami - The fact that Mami is the one who views being a magical girl as so ideal when she is the most fragile is to be expected, given what happens when she finds out the truth, but her interestingly sheltered life is nonetheless kind of confusing and curious when one considers that she'd made it as long as she had before Homura came on the scene. I'm not sure how long that was exactly, but given that she was so delicate and Kyubey is benefited by the girls falling into despair ultimately, I think it's interesting that she was essentially allowed the comfortable, if isolated, life she led/leads. The contrast of that with Kyoko's apparent relative homelessness after she and Kyoko had their differences following Kyoko's backstory is very intriguing. I am interested in her relationships with any of the girls or Kyubey, and [Rebellion spoiler] as mentioned above her particular definitely-mom relationship with Bebe/Nagisa.
Pairing prompts are provided with a grain of salt! I do not in any way require shippy fic, and I am flexible if you want to give me another pairing.
Kyoko/Sayaka - Some type of AU set during or post-anime would, of course, be welcome. As would anything set during Rebellion [spoiler warning]. The fact that in Rebellion Sayaka is effectively an angel masquerading as a human and knows it the entire time but seems content with whatever relationship she has with Kyoko no matter how temporary or transient it is is so beautifully bittersweet given how much pain she was in about loving someone before. Reunion fics, fix-it fics, domestic fics, even fics where they're fighting and being antagonistic toward one another would all be great. Also, what if Law of Cycles!Madoka had succeeded at the end of Rebellion? Would Kyoko be left alone to live out her life once again while Sayaka returned to heaven as an angel? Even after their battlefield confession, is that the fate they have to deal with, at least for now?
Kyoko/Homura - Maybe it's the fact that Homura seems to trust Kyoko as an ally in a unique way both in the anime and in Rebellion. Maybe it's the fact that they both, effectively, experience similar losses at the end of the anime or how their quests to save particular girls from contracts/despair. But there is something about them that seems tied together in a unique way that is a little bit distinct from how involved they both are in Madoka and Sayaka's stories respectively. I don't mind if it's messy or how it's explored, if it sort of feels like some kind of emotional infidelity to ignorant parties, or if it's post-canon and hurt/comfort somehow. Anything you can come up with for them if you choose to write them would be good, and I fully anticipate that it might be messy since Homura seems willing to go to Kyoko for a kind of help and alliance even when she refuses to be seen by Madoka, while she's covered in blood.
Madoka/Homura - A world where the nurse's aid Homura first met wasn't already in a losing fight for her life would be totally fine with me. I just want them to be happy and safe. But I also think that Homura's quest and ache to save Madoka and the way it impacts her view of herself, love, and humanity are all beautifully heartbreaking. Tied in with my Madoka prompt, it might be fun to see some kind of situation where Madoka felt compelled to fight for this relationship in some active way, to see her iron for more than a little glimpse before she becomes a source of absolute light. Even if it's while she's a source of absolute light. Rebellion spoilers: I also would totally welcome a fic where Law of Cycles!Madoka was allowed to succeed in what she was trying to do, to take Homura to the afterlife, and what followed.
Portal (Video Game)
Characters Requested: Chell (Portal), Wheatley (Portal)
I would be happy with gen or shippy fic about them. I would also be happy to see any of the other nominated characters if you so choose, so long as the focus is on either Chell or Wheatley or both of them. I am interested in canon compliant character study fics, as well as "fix" fics that may involve them being reunited somehow following the end of Portal 2. A missing scene during the game, whether it's when Wheatley is an ally or when he is a foe would be great, too. I'm also interested in a number of AU ideas, including the most common ones - cores-used-to-be-human/cores-now-are-human AUs and things of the line - and more creative ones. As mentioned above I'd be happy with crossovers with other relevant media including the other two fandoms I requested if you have an idea. Also, while I am in no way being prompted to endorse them or giving you homework, I'm also familiar with "Blue Sky" by waffleguppies, if that means anything to you, and I love it. I also am interested in "Grief Science" by CornetHummy and am reading it, so again, if that helps your ideas at all then that's great. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, feel 100% free to disregard but they're both fairly expansive fics if you want to look them up for your own pleasure. But anything that kind of presumed things from those would also be comprehensible and interesting to me. But again! Assuring you that 100% canon compliance is equally as good.
If you do go the shippy route, I don't blame you for not being too idealistic. I don't mind it being dark or tough. However, I do request that you don't do anything dubcon-y related to Wheatley being a villain - it's just uncomfortable to have that expanded past what already gives those vibes in the game while still trying to ship them.
Fics about Chell on her own or Wheatley on his own are also welcome! However, I'd prefer any about Wheatley not just be Stephen-Merchant-on-the-Office-by-another-name fics, even though I appreciate the cross-referencing when it's tasteful! Fic about Chell about Chell before she was a test subject and speculation of filling that in would be really interesting. Also, there are Proctor Notes about her - so if those were generated as a human, what was going on when they were being taken?
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Characters Requested: Baymax (Marvel), Hiro Hamada
Baymax's relationship to Hiro is one of the most heartwarming things I've seen in a family movie in a long time. I think particularly the fact that he was created as a "healthcare companion" is particularly appropriate and poignant for the time we live in. I am fascinated by questions about robots and feelings - whether or not they can have them as we do, if they experience things in similar ways or vastly different ways, and so on. I would be happy to receive anything that explored those issues with Baymax and perhaps challenged him in his friendship with Hiro. In the inverse, I would like to see what kinds of challenges Hiro faces as he grows a little older and how Baymax remains a part of his life. Anything from very serious fic to sort of silly-fun fic where having an enormous puffy friendly robot is an extreme inconvenience would be amazing. I would also welcome appearances from any of the other characters, including Tadashi if you feel like writing a fic where he could still be around either because of some type of alternate canon or because of some kind of science-thing happening. I would just prefer not to receive any fics which ship Hiro with anyone in his canon because they're not age-appropriate for him, but his or Baymax's interactions with any of them are definitely welcome.
A couple of specific ideas might include: Baymax falling into enemy hands but not being understood to the point that he is fully changed. Or, he is fully changed and Hiro's quest is to change his programming back. Alternatively, perhaps Hiro is stranded, trapped, or kidnapped and Baymax is on his own to find him. What limitations does he face because of the kind of robot he is?
